The Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association

Representing Breeders in all Ireland

Ireland has been famous for its cattle since it first started exporting livestock almost 1,000 years ago. Since then Irish stock has played a major role in the foundation of breeding herds throughout the world, particularly in Great Britain and both the North and South American Continents. The popularity of Irish cattle can be attributed to:

The care and attention, which they receive while being reared on the country's small farms

Centuries of experience in breeding and feeding of livestock

Natural production methods, where cattle graze lush pastures in a mild moist climate

The rich limestone foundation of the island of Ireland enriches its pastures with a plentiful supply of  calcium – so essential to good bone formation

Aberdeen-Angus were first introduced into Ireland as far back as 1860. While Ireland has a large number of breeders with small herds of breeding females other herds range to over 50 females. However, what is lacking in numbers is counter-balanced in quality. Breeders are very dedicated and breed Aberdeen-Angus with meticulous care. Down the years top grade bulls have been purchased in Scotland, America and Canada enabling breeders to keep pace with modern demands. For the past 20 or more years Irish bred bulls have had a major influence on the breed throughout the British Isles. Irish bred bulls and their offspring have taken all the major honours at Perth in the past.

The Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association has over 600 member breeders in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. The influence of Angus as a sire in Irish dairy and beef herds has shown a gradual increase in recent years and now accounts for 11.4% of all calf births compared to 9% in 1997  (source: ICBF Irish Cattle Breeding Statistics 99).

Irish Aberdeen-Angus beef, sold in the Republic of Ireland under the CERTIFIED IRISH ANGUS BEEF label, is promoted and exported by the Kepak Meat Group, through a producer group Aberdeen-Angus Producers (Ireland) Ltd.

In Northern Ireland, Aberdeen Angus Quality Beef Ltd. help producers meet demands for superior quality beef. Tenderlean Meats is a licensed supplier of Certified Aberdeen-Angus Beef in Northern Ireland.
