PRINCE OF WALES IS PATRON OF THE SOCIETY
The Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society is delighted to announce that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has accepted the invitation of the Society’s Council to become Patron of the Society.
The Prince of Wales succeeds Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother who was Patron of the Society for 67 years until her death in March 2002.
The Society’s Chief Executive, Ron McHattie, said The Prince of Wales’ acceptance of the Society’s invitation would be warmly welcomed by Aberdeen-Angus breeders all over the world.
“Breeders everywhere very much appreciate Prince Charles’ interest in the Aberdeen-Angus breed and are delighted that he is following in the footsteps of his much-loved grandmother in continuing the long-standing Royal Patronage which the Society has enjoyed for many years,” said Mr McHattie.
The Prince of Wales has a successful Aberdeen-Angus herd at Highgrove and takes an active interest in the Castle of Mey herd in Caithness which is now run by The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust. He attended the Aberdeen-Angus bull sales at Perth in February, 2002, and a few months earlier unveiled a life-size sculpture of an Aberdeen-Angus bull at Alford, Aberdeenshire, along with The Queen Mother who was making what turned out to be her last public engagement in Scotland.
The royal connection goes back to 1881 - two years after the founding of the Society - when Queen Victoria “graciously consented” to become Patroness of the Society, and was followed by King Edward (1901 - 1910) and King George V (1910 - 1935).
King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth became Patron and Patroness in 1935 and Queen Elizabeth continued as Patron following King George’s death in 1952.
